SUB: I have always wondered what does “OffPop” stands for. Is it just your dj name or a project? What is the idea behind it?

 * “OffPop” is multimedia collective from Skopje that works on spreading the electronic music, culture and variations of electro, techno, psychedelic, space, kraut, new wave, post punk music in combination & connection with art & experimental movies... The collective is composed of movie directors, photographers, musicians, fans of literature and contemporary art. We are part of the independent scene in Macedonia and we are trying to present noncommercial music, movies and other art.

SUB: You have been a part of teams behind the festivals Akto (Bitola) and De:sonanz (Skopje). Even if i have not been on the Akto events, i have always wondered about and love the idea of setting a party in a moving train Skopje – Bitola. Was the party successful, and please tell us more about Akto, and any “hints” about this year edition of the festival?

  * Yes, the party was great, it was in 2008, and I played music along with Robotek. There were a lot of people on the train, and all of us had a good time (although the atmosphere in the train was extremely hot J). I think that this party was the first of this kind of a parties in Macedonia. For this year we are negotiating with an audio-visual experimental band from Serbia. We are trying to bring this excellent band to the Akto festival, because it fits to the whole concept of the festival.

SUB: With just a few edition of De:sonanz festival, its starts to leave a mark on Skopje club cultural nights. Who are the members behind this festival, and are you satisfied with the outcome of the festival nights?  This year plans for De:sonanz?

 * The De:sonanz festival is supported and organized by Goethe Institute in Skopje, and the NGO “Domino”. Yes, we are satisfied by the outcome of the festival editions, because there were a lot of crowd and we had very good performers (local and foreign). The main problem is the lack of critical mass, people who are open for new kind of music and new types of media and arts. Although the festival had a good crowd, not all people appreciate, valued and support our efforts for presenting different contemporary musical culture and events. For this year we are planning to bring French and German artists, but I can’t give you more details in the moment.

SUB: Besides your love towards the music, you are also a Cinephile. Name a few titles that made a mark on you.

 * As a big fan of a independent artistic movies, I’m also part of the movie group “Film section” (Filmska Sekcija / http://filmskasekcija.blogspot.com/), we started movie projections and discussions two times in the month in the café Absinth House in Skopje’s Old Bazaar. This events are supported by an appropriate musical background after the film projections and discussions, because we think that is important to connect the both types of art.

My all time favourite movies are:
1. The Holy Mountain [1973]
2. El Topo [1970]
3. Enter The Void [2010]
4. The Man Who Felt To Earth [1976]
5. Altered States [1980]
6. Trouble Every Day [2001]
7. Suspiria [1977]
8. The Last Wave [1977]

11. Performance [1970]
12. Ciao Manhattan [1972]
13. Valhalla Rising [2009]
14. Watchmen [2009]
15. 2001 - A Space Odyssey [1968]
16. Häxan [1922]
17. Man With A Movie Camera [1929]
18. The Trip [1967]
19. Wicker Man [1973]
20. Giulietta Degli Spiriti [1965]

SUB: These past few years, Skopje has been trying to get back the glory of the club life in the city. Most of the clubs are open just for R&B-Hip-Hop, Pop dance gigs, and mostly trashy folk singers from the neighboring region. There are no chances of involving new electronic sounds, god forbid to mention the experimental sounds. The clubbing scene is divided into mainstream and indie performers (even if there is no difference), lots of teams/crews, bad blood etc. That has brought the result of to many small gigs, and a few club nights. What is your point of view of the current state of the club culture in Skopje?

 * In Macedonia, there was always a quality independent music scene that is inadequately treated. This is the basic problem. As a nation we have a sense of what quality is and always up to date with developments in the global independent music scene. The second biggest problem is that our youth is poisoned with poor quality, low level of musical deviations, which reflect the context and the level of social environment that surrounds us. Those are some of the reasons for my negative point of view and you can’t say that the independent Macedonian music and cultural scene will soon prosper and get the treatment they deserve if thing don’t change in near future.

SUB: Where can people catch you playing and what is next for you?

 * You can find me during the weekends in “Absint House” in Skopje’s Old Bazaar and the club “Wire” in Kumanovo. My plans for this summer is the traveling multimedia project in which along with my collaborators – we intend to go on tour in the cities of Macedonia and the region, as well as to participate in summer festivals in the country and abroad. Also, I’m negotiating with foreign bands and producers, but I can’t give you details in the moment and you will be further noticed for all the activities.
