S.U.B. Podcast #20 Tim Reaper (UK)

Today we have a young artist from the UK. I have noticed him after i have heard a couple of his tunes online. His style was completely different than any other young producer that i have heard. Suddenly i have discovered a few young producers that will be promoted in the SUB podcast series. This week S.U.B. Podcast #18 Tim Reaper (UK)

SUB: Hello, Tim. Could you please introduce yourself?

* My name’s Tim Reaper & I’m a jungle/drum & bass producer.

SUB: How did you get involved yourself into playing and producing music?

* I first found out about drum & bass when I was about 15, when I had to get two music magazines for an essay project in GCSE Media Studies and the two magazines I got were Mixmag & Metal Hammer. On the copy of Mixmag, there was a cover mix CD which Andy C had done and I was blown away when I listened to it, I’d heard nothing like it before, music with such energy.

After a few months on drum & bass, I discovered jungle by browsing MySpace for artists I knew & liked and I stumbled upon a fake DJ Hype profile, which had the tracks Super Sharp Shooter & Dred Bass on it. They were like none of the drum & bass I had heard before and I noticed that I was playing them more than the drum & bass, so I decided to do a bit of investigating and when I was 16, I decided that I would dive head first into what I soon found out was old school jungle.

SUB: Love the way that in your tracks can be heard a certain amen break that resembles to those a-breaks that were used in the 90’s. This became your signature, and you are already known in the jungle / drum and bass world cause of it. How did you decide, or came to this idea to use those certain drum kits, into nowadays production?

* It came from my aim to try & be as authentic sounding as possible, which involved seeking out a lot of the sample packs that were doing the rounds of the scene at the time, such as the Zero-G Datafile (& pretty much every other pack they did at the time) packs, the E-Lab Goldmine packs, the Best Service packs, the Kniteforce sample CD and all those CDs from the time. From those, you can get a whole load of great sounding samples, ranging from all sorts of sources and usually by sticking with those and not being too obsessed with making the tracks sound all shiny & modern & updated, you can get that authenticity in your tracks.

SUB: What equipment do you use for producing tracks?

* Right now, I actually haven’t got any equipment. Well, that’s not true I recently bought my first piece of kit the other day, an Alesis Q25 MIDI keyboard, but apart from that, it’s just a really basic setup consisting of my laptop & a pair of production headphones (Sennheiser HD 380s) I’ve had for about 1-2 years now.

SUB: By now you have released for: DSCI4 Records, Alphacut, Criminal, Digibeat Music, and Stepping Forward Records. Have you signed anything new? Future releases?

* On top of all that, I’ve got solo tracks coming on 117, Trace’s label which he started after he ended DSCI4, a track on Threshold’s label Dub Clinique, a remix I got asked to do of a Vybz Kartel tune and a track on a new upstart digital label called Thermosphere, think my one’s the first on that label.

I’ve also got collaborative releases coming with Dwarde on Omni Music, Parallel on Inperspective, Drumlinezz on Channel 82 & some other stuff coming on a new label I’m involved with called Green Bay Wax, keep an eye out for that one.

SUB: Your sound is much more experimental, but due to the fast growing and close combining bass music, you somehow manage to successfully sell that old school amen sound over new bass genre music. Its fucking awesome, how did you come to this idea?

* Well, one thing that I’ve noticed is that a lot more people like jungle than you think, but for the most part, they never really know where to go to hear it or where to find it or, like some of the people that I send tracks to weren’t getting sent any jungle, Trace for example, was only really getting sent a lot of neuro & tech when I decided to send him some of what I made and he wasn’t as aware at the time of the current jungle, but he got made aware.

SUB: What other music styles do you love?

* I’m quite a big fan of that juke/footwork stuff because usually all the stuff at this tempo usually gets thrown under the D&B umbrella, but that stuff is so far off from it, whilst still having that energy of the old jungle I love & make. by (D.S.)

S.U.B. Podcast #19 Ivan Gogovski (Serbia)

SUB: How did you start playing Jungle / drum and bass music?

I had my first contact with the jungle/dnb culture in late '96 when i was given several CD's from a friend, among them 4 Hero's seminal album "Parallel Universe" & 1st of React's Artcore compilation series which immeasurably changed and influenced my view of the music world. At that time Hip Hop was at first place to me, but since dj setup was too expensive 4 me, it has been only idea for the future. I had to wait 5 years to obtain equipment... During this time changed my priorities and dnb came on the first place.

SUB: Please tell us more about your shows on Jungletrain.net? (How and when did you start hosting a show on jungletrain.net?)

I am not promoter and I don’t organize parties so my gigs mainly depended on others engaging me.
As I become more and more distant from mainstream dnb, which in mid '00 (from mine point of view), alienated from the essence of its source, I’ve started exploring breakbeat orientated sound that continued evolving original concept . At the time appeared genius Bassbin, leaded by Rohan with the support of the Naphta and torchbearers of that sound, Breakage & Equinox. In period from 2000. to 2008. Bassbin released series of the amazing tracks. Also in 2005. Breakage & Equinox revamped Scientific Wax label which has been hibernated for almost decade. All of these brings me to Jungletrain Radio, on which SciWax Show is still transmitted. Besides of Scientific Wax Show on Jungletrain Radio shows are hosted by: Double 0 & Mantra [Rupture], Chris Inperspective, Code [Subtle Audio], Rumbleton, DJ Trax & Nucleus, Jason 0s, Skitty & Nolige [Foundation X], Phuture-T, etc...

In early 2009. I applied for the slot and soon started to host show titled "Adventures in Breakbeat".
Unfortunately technical issue forced me to postpone show until the 2012. when, with the big support of Vlado [Kicbea] and Nemanja [Shonze], transformed it in Reminiscence Show.

SUB: Who is behind reminiscence show on Jungletrain?

Vlado, Nemanja & Me

SUB: How did you start Reminiscence audio? And what have you released so far?

RMA was Vlado’s idea. About one Year ago he came with an idea about starting label which became interesting for me. Since at that time I was occupied on my working place I offered my only my assistance. Soon I lost my job and most of the time I’ve started spending at home, when the idea of active involvement in creating of the label became excellent solution for creative "spending" of free time. In the meantime Vlado and Nemanja have already prepared few releases (Nuage, Parhelia,Nothing) and shortly after Kalgan's EP. Currently topical is labels fifth release which is at the same time first one in a Temporal series which is going to be orientated to more modern sound. This will be followed by several releases as homage to “atmospheric” dnb and breakbeat culture. Producers of this mini cycle are Eschaton, Infest & Parallel, Terminus, afterwards EP by Fushara and second EP of the Temporal series produced by Dave Hoax.

SUB: Future releases for RAUDIO?

Until the end of the Year are planned single of Montreal's producer Jason 0s/Daat; Retro series which consists of music by 2D33P duo (Legendary DJ Trace & Voyager), Scape, Kid Lib, Tim Reaper, Dwarde...
Also in the pipeline is exclusive material by Okee, Noble Sense, Dave Hoax and another true legend DJ Trax.

SUB: Your view of the current state of dnb in Serbia?

I believe that situation is pretty much the same everywhere, but the people involved in promoting dnb culture are not giving up...

SUB: RAudio seems to get more and more attention from the djs/producers outside of Serbia. With whom did you collaborate? How did you come to the idea to form an label?

DJ Trax himself, who has joint show with Nucleus on Jungletrain Radio, among the first accepted Reminiscence Audio releases. Thanking to Jungletrain Radio I've met young Dutch producer Infest (which is going to master labels forthcoming releases),whose first LP titled “Darkofi” has just been released on Omni Music and another one is on the way. Also I would like to mention our mate Yankowsky from Poland whose label is Monochrome Recordings. As I mentioned before, forming the label was Vlado's idea I was just godfather.

SUB: Why do you love drum and bass music?

Jah, Amen & Weight.

SUB: All-time favorite top 10 

I simply cannot make choice of only 10 tracks in history of this musical genre over 20 years long. There is so much good tunes that it won’t be honest to choose 10.

SUB: Any word of wisdom?

As I don’t consider myself old enough to say any "words of wisdom" I would quote my true musical heroes:

"EVERY STAR IN THE SKY TELLS US HOW AND SHOWS US WHY WE MUST ALL GIVE UNIVERSAL LOVE"

S.U.B. Podcast #18 Nino Flooder (Mk)

Merhaba. This week’s guest comes from the legendary Skopje vinyl house “Massiva”.

One of the youngest dj names that played in the golden years of Skopje (93-99). Passionate vinyl collector and a great technician. Member of the promotional group Pollux. True legend in Skopje. Podcast # 18 Nino a.k.a. Flooder.

https://soundcloud.com/dj-flooder

SUB: Are you aware that you are one of the biggest names in the Macedonian clubbing history?

Sure is a nice compliment which I can’t realize yet, because I don’t feel that way. I appreciate the nice words and the introduction, and most certainly all the people who share your point of view. Whenever I get the chance to communicate, party, or play music I don’t feel like that, I want to be casual and down to earth regarding everything I do. Thank you again.

SUB: I remembered you by filing in as a substitute for the second gig that Umek was suppose to do in Skopje, back in 99. You have played that night with PassNGR, and dropped Holy Ghost “Hand of god”. The club was filled with people from the IRC network, and you only had 17-18 years back then. Anyway even if this was not your first event, please describe us your first gigs and impressions of playing in a club?

Yes, Umek was announced but he could not make it, so we had pretty big space in order to play our music, which varied that night in different genres. It was in the beginning of my career, let us call it like that, and it meant a world to me. My first gig was one year before in the club Metropol, and it was together with the guys from Massiva, PassNGR, Dejan Tevdo, Shark (if I am not mistaken ) and Dj Gaby (Slovenia). The parties back then where I have been dj-ing, where full with enthusiasm and positive energy, and for me it was a different dimension, turntables, mixers, crazy crowd thirsty for music and with more open ears and minds. From my point of view I was not aware of my performances because honestly it was like a dream back then.

SUB: As i mentioned earlier, at the end of the 90’s. Skopje experienced a new cultural rebirth. Youth was living and communicating 24/7 via IRC networks. Lot’s of that core of people even today are friends and still are hooked on the current social networks. Somehow i think that people are not even aware that the whole club life happened because of this impact, of music, technology, and social networks combined together.

You yourself have experienced it, as a part of this core of people that has been online for more than 10 years.

I am interested in your point of view of these 10 years migrating from one to another social network, where the fuck are we going?

I must admit that the influence of the social networks back than really had a great impact on our general life, in communicating, hanging out together, and most important giving support to the events organized back then. I hope that we will not be stuck in our chairs and virtually be present at the parties, ha ha ha. In the past years the social networks have had their peak, Myspace was quite influential 4 years ago, Facebook now currently holding the throne, and special social networks for musicians like Soundcloud and Mixcloud are of great significance for the electronic music, and bringing together the people who share interests in it. My belief is that we are going to be attached to them as we were once dependent of the television, the radio or the newspapers. And we will try not be consumed from the social networks 100%.

SUB: You started as a kid who was hanging in the legendary vinyl shop “Masiva”.

Sooner than later you have become one of the legendary names that come out of that shop. At that time with out even turning 18, you have made yourself a name on the Macedonian techno scene. What do you remember most from that period?

I remember everything, ha ha ha! I have the feeling like it was yesterday, honestly. I remember the people, their enthusiasm and thirst for music, information regarding the artists, since Massiva Shop was opened in my neighborhood. Back then there was no internet access as it is now, the information were precious things to have, and only the older and more experienced had them, however were not selfish to share them. I think that every music that was present on the market back then found its way in everyone’s home or stereo system. I did not know a person which listened only to one genre of music, nor to speak or search only for a particular artist. The funniest thing was that we were sharing one magazine for one month which contained info for the clubbing life in Europe, the Dj magazine that is, before it went commercial. Until we finished the magazine there was already a new issue of it, so we had to find a “victim” to buy it and share it with the rest of the music lovers.

SUB: For those who don’t know, you are a passionate vinyl “junkie” or collector.

I can understand the whole passion and the elitism of the vinyl collector. Let’s make this clear, you are probably one of the rarest people in Macedonia that continued buying vinyl, while others just by a live performance vinyl and not even try to buy a digital track. But we are not here to judge them… Just as a lousy pokemon fan could say, you can’t catch them all, or in your case “You can’t by them all”. Are you aware that you are missing out a ton of quality music?

I plead guilty I am an addict, however I do it for myself, I haven’t stopped buying records for 17 years, it is something that has grown as a part of me and I don’t want it to go away. I can’t judge nor to speak for the others, and yes you are right, “you can’t have them all”. This rule makes me even more dedicated in sense that I still search for vinyls that I used to listen when I was a 12 yrs old child, and I could not get them at all, for me it is like an adventure game, and I can’t describe the feeling when I find something that I’ve been searching for that long.

I am aware, because I follow the digital releases as well, however I make lists of tracks which are good and wait for them to get released on vinyl, if this does not happen, I go to the next one in the list. I am not sad because I am missing music, I am sad that it does not get released on vinyl. As you said in the beginning can’t have them or win them all, I think that this is the beauty, you try to fill in the gap with something close or similar to something that you don’t have.

SUB: What new music genres do you follow these days?

Those are not new music genres that I follow, it is funk, soul and disco music. These genres present the roots to the electronic dance music the one as we know it. And it makes me even happier to see where all the music these days gets its groove from.

SUB: Favorite clubbing period in Skopje?

I cannot be modest and say only one period, can I say the period from which I have started attending the parties 94/95 until now. The periods were changing, hence the music and the magic that was within it. Each time there is something new and challenging is worth to remember.

SUB: Is it possible to see the whole Massiva team in one club night in Skopje, just for old time sakes?

I hope that this question will bring an initiative for this kind of event.

SUB: Do the Macedonian DJ’s deserve a serious booking agency?

Most certainly they do, however the things with the electronic music scene currently are not so keen on the djs side. Nowadays the dj has to be a little bit of everything; music producer, manager, businessman, agent, designer, and etc. I wish the things could be more simple as before.

SUB: I don’t like the current state of the clubbing life in Skopje. Divided, everyone is playing and making their on terms. Also the public is either scattered or there isn’t enough core clubbing movement. Your view of the current clubbing scene in Skopje?

Me neither, the history seems to be repeating itself once more and everyone has something “important” to say about the music, which is more or less addressed to the same target again, the audienc. My point of view for the current situation is that we are hitting rock bottom compared to the “golden days”. However the critical mass that was made from those days remains strong and balances more or less the whole situation. Our effort as djs, and in some aspect as promoters of the electronic dance music is to find fresh and new blodd, ha ha ha, meaning new kids which will give positive energy and movement of the current situation. The starting point should be some education first and then to let them choose theirs “cup of tea”, and remember the dance music knows no boundaries.

SUB: Are you planning to have a gig night on those Skopje 2014 rafts?

Probably YES, if Peter Pan or Captain Hook invites me over there to play to their jolly fellows.

SUB: Please describe to us how you prepare when you are going out on a club night?

In one word, chaos! Ha,ha,ha! First of all if the club where I am playing has no equipment, I pack my turntables, I place one on top of the other, take the mixer, grab my dj bags, put everything in the car, and I hit the road. Regarding the music selection, I have a standard pack of vinyls which I carrying with me, which I make throughout the whole week, by listening to the tracks on the internet, crazy eh?! Because I don’t have time to listen to them for the whole day, and the samples which are over the internet somehow give me enough clue what the track/vinyl is all about. After I make the core selection I put plus 40% of the tracks that I want to play to the audience, or to listen how they sound on a loud sound system, or I have never played them at all.

SUB: Any words of wisdom?

Love what you do regarding music, no matter how hard or how vague the whole thing might seem at the moment.

S.U.B. Podcast #17 Martchin [OffPop] (Mk)

                                                                   By NeuErotik

Kia ora. This week’s guest is Martchin, part of the multimedia collective “OffPop” from Skopje and BTKRSH. Been part of a team, organizer and editor of the web-zine “Skopje’s burning”, later on hosted the radio show “Skopje’s burning” at Kanal103. His sets are variety of trippy techno, electro, acid house, ebm, psychedelic, space, kraut, new wave, post punk, dub... Also, part of the team behind two festivals: Akto Festival For Contemporary Arts that is placed in Bitola, and De:sonanz Festival For Electronic Music, Visual Art and New Media which is held in Skopje. You can catch him play at the “OffPop” events that are placed through Republic of Macedonia… S.U.B. Podcast #17 Martchin [OffPop].

SUB: I have always wondered what does “OffPop” stands for. Is it just your dj name or a project? What is the idea behind it?

 * “OffPop” is multimedia collective from Skopje that works on spreading the electronic music, culture and variations of electro, techno, psychedelic, space, kraut, new wave, post punk music in combination & connection with art & experimental movies... The collective is composed of movie directors, photographers, musicians, fans of literature and contemporary art. We are part of the independent scene in Macedonia and we are trying to present noncommercial music, movies and other art.

SUB: You have been a part of teams behind the festivals Akto (Bitola) and De:sonanz (Skopje). Even if i have not been on the Akto events, i have always wondered about and love the idea of setting a party in a moving train Skopje – Bitola. Was the party successful, and please tell us more about Akto, and any “hints” about this year edition of the festival?

  * Yes, the party was great, it was in 2008, and I played music along with Robotek. There were a lot of people on the train, and all of us had a good time (although the atmosphere in the train was extremely hot J). I think that this party was the first of this kind of a parties in Macedonia. For this year we are negotiating with an audio-visual experimental band from Serbia. We are trying to bring this excellent band to the Akto festival, because it fits to the whole concept of the festival.

SUB: With just a few edition of De:sonanz festival, its starts to leave a mark on Skopje club cultural nights. Who are the members behind this festival, and are you satisfied with the outcome of the festival nights?  This year plans for De:sonanz?

 * The De:sonanz festival is supported and organized by Goethe Institute in Skopje, and the NGO “Domino”. Yes, we are satisfied by the outcome of the festival editions, because there were a lot of crowd and we had very good performers (local and foreign). The main problem is the lack of critical mass, people who are open for new kind of music and new types of media and arts. Although the festival had a good crowd, not all people appreciate, valued and support our efforts for presenting different contemporary musical culture and events. For this year we are planning to bring French and German artists, but I can’t give you more details in the moment.

SUB: Besides your love towards the music, you are also a Cinephile. Name a few titles that made a mark on you.

 * As a big fan of a independent artistic movies, I’m also part of the movie group “Film section” (Filmska Sekcija / http://filmskasekcija.blogspot.com/), we started movie projections and discussions two times in the month in the café Absinth House in Skopje’s Old Bazaar. This events are supported by an appropriate musical background after the film projections and discussions, because we think that is important to connect the both types of art.

My all time favourite movies are:
1. The Holy Mountain [1973]
2. El Topo [1970]
3. Enter The Void [2010]
4. The Man Who Felt To Earth [1976]
5. Altered States [1980]
6. Trouble Every Day [2001]
7. Suspiria [1977]
8. The Last Wave [1977]
9. Don't Look Now [1973]
10. Easy Rider [1969]
11. Performance [1970]
12. Ciao Manhattan [1972]
13. Valhalla Rising [2009]
14. Watchmen [2009]
15. 2001 - A Space Odyssey [1968]
16. Häxan [1922]
17. Man With A Movie Camera [1929]
18. The Trip [1967]
19. Wicker Man [1973]
20. Giulietta Degli Spiriti [1965]
21. 8½ [1963]
22. Fellini's Casanova [1976]
23. Histoires Extraordinaires [1968]
24. Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes [1972]
25. Nosferatu Phantom der Nacht [1979]
26. Picnic at Hanging Rock [1975]
27. Inception [2010]
28. Naked Lunch [1991]
29. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [1998]
30. Amer [2009]
31. Beyond The Black Rainbow [2010]
32. Pola X [1999]
33. Holy Motors [2012]
34. Valerie and Her Week of Wonders [1970]
35. Sanatorium Pod Klepsydra [1973]

And with the complete filmography of Stanley Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky David Lynch, Lars Von Trier, I’m completing the list J.

SUB: These past few years, Skopje has been trying to get back the glory of the club life in the city. Most of the clubs are open just for R&B-Hip-Hop, Pop dance gigs, and mostly trashy folk singers from the neighboring region. There are no chances of involving new electronic sounds, god forbid to mention the experimental sounds. The clubbing scene is divided into mainstream and indie performers (even if there is no difference), lots of teams/crews, bad blood etc. That has brought the result of to many small gigs, and a few club nights. What is your point of view of the current state of the club culture in Skopje?

 * In Macedonia, there was always a quality independent music scene that is inadequately treated. This is the basic problem. As a nation we have a sense of what quality is and always up to date with developments in the global independent music scene. The second biggest problem is that our youth is poisoned with poor quality, low level of musical deviations, which reflect the context and the level of social environment that surrounds us. Those are some of the reasons for my negative point of view and you can’t say that the independent Macedonian music and cultural scene will soon prosper and get the treatment they deserve if thing don’t change in near future.

SUB: Where can people catch you playing and what is next for you?

 * You can find me during the weekends in “Absint House” in Skopje’s Old Bazaar and the club “Wire” in Kumanovo. My plans for this summer is the traveling multimedia project in which along with my collaborators – we intend to go on tour in the cities of Macedonia and the region, as well as to participate in summer festivals in the country and abroad. Also, I’m negotiating with foreign bands and producers, but I can’t give you details in the moment and you will be further noticed for all the activities.

S.U.B. Interview with DJ Bailey Intabeats

This week, we are doing an interview with a host of a radio show that lasted for 10 years on BBC 1Xtra. Started playing music and recording mix tapes for friends, clubs and pirate radio stations. Later on he became DJ for Metalheadz, which he is to this day.  Released couple of tunes for Metalheadz, CIA, Full Cycle, Protechshon. Today he is touring around the globe, while he starts an online monthly mix series “Intabeats” in partnership with Serato on mixcloud. You can hear him play on the 13th April at Run Mk festival that’s held in Shtip (Macedonia).

SUB: I kept thinking if I had a chance to do an interview with you, how I would start it.So my first question: Do you miss the Studio, microphone, all that excitement before the show?

 * Very much. Stepping to the mic every week and being able to freely represent all sides of Drum & Bass live worldwide became a vital outlet not just for me but for the thousands listening. It’s hard to find a place where you can express yourself in that way without pressure. I got great pleasure in doing that.

SUB: I was one of the thousand listeners to your last show on BBC 1Xtra. There was a lot of chatter online, and in the studio you were honored buy the biggest names in the drum and bass industry. You could feel trough the broadcast all that energy fluctuations floating around the studio and online. Pure “Unity” vibes and shivers down the spine were sent thought out the globe. Those moments are so rare, especially in the global scale.

I know it’s hard for you, but what were your thoughts at those moments, where you aware that a P.L.U.R. moment was happening and the whole globe were tuned in to give you the respect for those 10 years spent in BBC 1Xtra?

 *  It was like an out of body experience watching the amount of respect that was shown to me that night. Legendary DJs and producers who barely attend anything unless they’re working came to show support. I couldn’t believe all that was for me but that’s when I realised my efforts and what I represented over the last 10 years was something special. I think they and everyone else listening realised that I was there to push, talk and respect the full heritage of Drum & Bass. It wasn’t about me, an ego or a brand. I was there to make sure everyone knew what us lovers of this infectious music are about, where we came from, where we are now and where we’re going. It’s all I cared about.

SUB: As a producer you have released couple track for Metalheadz, C.I.A, and Footprint music. Are there any new releases coming from you?

 * I’ve recently done remixes for KOF, Damian Marley & Nas, Chipmunk & Trey Songz that are out but I’ve also just done a remix of Zero T & Script’s ‘Guessing Games’ for Zero T’s ‘Footprints’ label and I have a remix of Kryptic Minds ‘Hide The Tears’ that I’ve been sitting on for a while. I’m always working on tracks at my own leisure. There’s a fair backlog now. Watch this space…

SUB: After the end of your show on BBC 1Xtra, you have started a global tour.

Most of your DJ colleagues are constantly on the road thorough the globe for a whole year, and then they do it again, and so on. To someone this seems to be a perfect job, while others can’t manage that constantly moving from a place to place. It’s one thing to travel just for the weekend, am talking about heavy touring.

Where do you find yourself in that mess? Do you like that 24/7 party people rush, or just closing your eyes moving from place to place. And could you please tell us something more about that kind of experience.

 * There are definitely worse jobs in the world but most of the time there’s more work than play. The average day on tour consists mainly of queues, planes, trains and automobiles which may seem like a piece of cake but it’s very hard to get any real significant rest while in transit. By the time you get to your hotel you might have an hour to eat, ready yourself and your music, then off to the club, play for a couple of hours, head back to the hotel (if you’re sensible and value your rest), sleep for a few hours, rise early and back to the airport for the for the next city. Basically bad diet, alcohol and lack of sleep will easily catch up on you if you don’t pace yourself right when doing this day after day.

SUB: Who were your childhood music idols? And what sort of music can be found in your music stash?

 * I was brought up on Motown so artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross became my favourites. That’s what I’d see my mum singing and dancing around the house to when I was young. We also listened to a lot of John Holt, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and Burning Spear. Other than those names, I have quite a vast array of music I’ve collected over the years from Pop to Techno but the main bulk of it consists of Hip Hop and naturally Drum & Bass.

SUB: What are your all time favorite drum and bass tracks?

1. A Guy Called Gerald – Anything (Columbia)

2. Splash – Babylon (Dee Jay)

3. Dom & Roland – Thunder (Moving Shadow)
4. Calibre – Second Sun (Signature)
5. Tom & Jerry – Dancer (Tom & Jerry)
6. Total Science – Tight Fit (Metalheadz)
7. Dillinja – Heavenly Bass (Logic)
8. Photek – Seventh Samurai (Photek)
9. Breakage – Ask (Bassbin)
10. Firefox & 4-Tree – Warning (Philly Blunt)

SUB: Please tell us how did you end up in Metallheadz?

Back in 1994 at a rave held by Moving Shadow in Equinox, Central London, a fellow Intanatty Crew member MC Flux introduced me to Kemistry & Storm. He told them I was rolling with Inta and that I had a weekly radio show on a pirate station called Energy FM. It was one of many intros Flux had made for me during that year and I thought this one was just another one of those ones where he wanted to make my face familiar to people. Little did I know, Kemisty & Storm decided to tune into my radio show. They gave me a call a few weeks later saying there was a new club starting up they were involved in and would I like to play. Naturally I said yes not knowing this club would become one of the most important club nights in D&B history…, Metalheadz

SUB: Why do you love drum and bass music?

 * It has elements of every type of music I grew up on. Break-beats from Hip Hop, strings that resemble my Motown influences and experimental textures that throw back to my days of Techno.

SUB: Getting to know the fact that drum and bass comes from an 6 second drum loop played by the Winstons – “Amen Brother”, that later on progressed into now day’s drum and bass global movement, with its own culture, plus making a plenty of other music genres and etc. What is your view on that story and those 6 seconds?

 * It’s incorrect to say Drum & Bass comes only from this loop. There are plenty of other break-beats that contributed to Drum & Bass, most of which come from James Brown’s band ‘The JB’s’. It just happens that this particular break-beat was sonically the best and needed no extra layering to make it stand out. That’s why it got used so much.

SUB: Please tell us your thoughts about the current state of drum and bass production worldwide and knowing that you have tons of unreleased music, any new up-comers we should watch out for?

 * What I love about Drum & Bass production worldwide are the hungry bedroom producers who have nothing to prove to anyone other than themselves with no limitations, boundaries or pressure to fit in to what’s popular. That’s where you get the best results. I’d say to look out for Sevin, Acid Lab, Savage Rehab, Penny Giles and Total Recall to name a few. The quality and consistency of these artists material is of a high standard.

SUB: Which turning point in the drum and bass history has made an impact on you?

 * There was no turning back after Goldie’s ‘Timeless’ LP. By then Goldie’s Metalheadz Sunday Session at the Blue Note where I was a resident DJ already had legendary status. That album took me, the club and the entire scene to a new level.

SUB: First time to have a gig in the Balkans. Have you ever heard of  Macedonia?

 * I’ve definitely heard of Macedonia but I know nothing of the culture. I’m excited about going to learn about another part of the world and how they react to the UK born sound of Drum & Bass via me having lived and breathed in for the last 20 years.

SUB: Recently you have been honored as one of the 20 pioneers in the world of drum and bass in an article by Vibe Magazine. Been a member in Metalheadz since its beginnings. Your name is world widely known trough those 10 years spent in 1xtra. You stand for a respected dj because of your technical and music knowledge. Is it really worth it, and are you pleased that you have made an impact on the worldwide drum and bass scene?

 * Being honored by a magazine originally founded by Quincy Jones for HIp-Hop and R&B audiences in itself is a true reward for personal sacrifices I've made to be a part of this scene. It's a sign that I'm making a real contribution to the music I love. However, as important as they are, I don't do what I do for these accolades. I do it to help preserve the longevity of a music that deserves more respect even from it's own country i.e the UK. I don't believe there have been many other independent music’s from the UK that have lasted this long and penetrated the world to the extent Drum & Bass has and I hope that one day the UK will embrace this music as the US have heralded Hip-Hop. That's all I want.

SUB: Any words of wisdom?

 * From experience in this industry and life generally, understand that people always respect and individual who isn’t afraid of being themselves no matter how hyper or chilled that individual may be. Confidence is what draws people to you. Be yourself.

On behalf of Skopje Urban Beats, thank you for the interview. (D.S.)

Kryptic Minds ‘Hide The Tears’.

1. A Guy Called Gerald – Anything (Columbia)
2. Splash – Babylon (Dee Jay)
3. Dom & Roland – Thunder (Moving Shadow)
4. Calibre – Second Sun (Signature)
5. Tom & Jerry – Dancer (Tom & Jerry)
6. Total Science – Tight Fit (Metalheadz)
7. Dillinja – Heavenly Bass (Logic)
8. Photek – Seventh Samurai (Photek)
9. Breakage – Ask (Bassbin)
10. Firefox & 4-Tree – Warning (Philly Blunt)

Metalheadz?

од бендот на James Brown “The JB’s”.

S.U.B. Podcast #15 Jelow & Sorriso (Serbia)

Witaj. Another guest mix is in front of you, but this we have a promo podcast to a spring festival that’s been happening for couple of years in Shtip (Macedonia). It’s the 7th edition of the Run.mk festival (13.04.2013), and our guests are one of the performers that night.  They are running their online show “Drumology Radio Show” on BeTon Radio (www.betonradio.rs/drumology/), and running the label Audio Colours. Their set will be backed up by MC WackWacko from Madred (www.facebook.com/madredmusic). So in this week SUB podcast #15 we have Jelow & Sorriso (Serbia).

SUB: How did you heard about the Run Mk festival?

 * I (Jelow) performed here with Adam (WackWacko) couple of years ago and had a great time! People here really love dnb, especially jungle, and I knew I had to come back again with Sorriso and here we are!

SUB: Tell us how did you both ended by playing dnb music?

 * Jelow : I first heard about dnb many years ago and since then I am trying to present this beautiful genre to as many people as possible. I love its broken beats and soul.

 * Sorriso: I had a radio show in 2002 where I played dnb for the first time, than I took a 6-year brake and started again in 2008. Since then I have been sharing decks with Jelow and loved every minute of it. :D

SUB: Audio Colours is label based in Novi Sad. Could you tell us something more about this label?

 * Audio Colours is a group of musicians, DJs, producers and MCs that is gathered around a common idea, to promote a wide range of musical directions symbolically representing them with different colors.

SUB: For how long are you in collaboration with MC Adam from Madred?

 * We met Adam many years ago in Novi Sad. He was MC-ing on parties and we immediately recognized his talent. Very soon we started working together and having him on mic is an honor for us because he always brings incredible energy with him and people recognize that. Besides that, he is incredible designer of videos, gaming apps, retro gamer and a JUNGLIST.  :)

SUB: Tell us something more about “Drumology Radio Show”?

 * Drumology is a radio show dedicated to drum’n’bass music. The show is being aired on BeTon internet radio (http://www.betonradio.rs/) stationed in Belgrade, Serbia. Drumology is being aired every Wednesday from 10 PM until midnight.
The idea is to share quality drum’n’bass music and educate people about all the different genres of this extraordinary style. All the listeners are able to hear the podcasts from various DJs and producers from The Balkans and their comprehension of this genre. This show is also about promoting some fresh, young and perspective producers who are doing their best on continuing on spreading the drum’n’bass music.

We had you on our show too! :D

SUB: This will be your first b2b set in Macedonia. Are you excited for playing at Run Mk?

 * I (Jelow) am very excited because I am coming back again and I hope that it will be as good as it was the last time. I told Sorriso that the best dnb parties are in Macedonia so he can’t wait to get there and play! Last time I met a lot of good people and made some new friends so I am really looking forward to seeing them.

SUB: What is your passion for drum and bass, why do you love it, play it?

 * We love the soul of it and the energy that it brings. The joy of life in its sounds and unbelievable broken beat makes you want to dance and smile.

Plus, it’s really cool! :D

SUB: I have red in your bio that you (Jelow) are a passionate gamer. So what was your last played game? J

* Passionate gamer means I played nearly all major and indi games in the last 25 years. The last game that cought my attention is World of Warcraft, but I am playing more games at the same time. If you have a game to recommend please do so! :D

Thank you guys for your podcast and interview for Skopje Urban Beats. Looking forward to see you play at the 7th edition of Run Mk Festival. (D.S.)
