S.U.B. Podcast #06 Review & Download

Hello again. Podcast #06 includes releases from this past two weeks. Lot of artist were suppose to be included, due to lack of free time, was unable to do another mix retry. This is made in one take. Includes lots of experimental sounds, beats, so am not sure is it suitable for working condition or for anyone’s ears. So, give it a go. Click, listen and follow Skopje Urban Beats. Also, next week S.U.B. gets to do their first PARTY! WOOO! Follow the info on  http://www.facebook.com/skopje.beats/

This week’s podcast starts of with Golden Panda and two singles from his “Trust” EP. Singles played on this podcast are “Trust” and “Burnt-Out Car In A Forest”. The second single that iv played, was so mad, that I was unsure what will be the reaction of the listneren. Since its of beat, glitch track, with a perfect name, “Burnt-Out Car In A Forest” and is a great ride. Trust is far more playable and iv really enjoyed this two singles, you can check out Golden Panda at: https://soundcloud.com/gold-panda or buy his EP here http://www.iamgoldpanda.com/.

Flux pavilion - “Blow the roof” is the first single/title of the EP, which comes out 28 of January via Big Beat Records.

Battle box is the name of the new project and EP made by Massive Attack’s 3D aka Robert Del Naja, and featuring Guy Garvey from Elbow.

Sun Glitters “Mouth/Tight” released by Lefse Records. Track used for the podcast was “Mouth” remixed done by Shigeto.

“Viral Humanity”, “7 Million Lives” and “Soul Connection” are track from the album “Hong Kong” made by Davwuh. For me its an unknown producer, check him out at http://davwuh.bandcamp.com/ , love the artwork. I will quote Davwuh own description of the music he makes “Broken voices suffocating beneath heavy bass weight, dark ambient soundscapes, dream chord arpeggios, the new jazz age.”

New release “Hardcourage” by FaltyDL for Ninja Tune. “Uncea” and “Korben Dallas” are the tracks that were used in this podcast. Must say – love the name of the tack “Korben Dallas”. Finally, on of the coolest fictional characters ever made, has his own soundtrack sound.

A bit older EP by DFRNT  titled “Monday Morning” for the label - On the Edge. Track used “Monday morning” and “Piston.”

Free single by Boddika – “Soul What (Boddika rmx)” which can be found at http://www.edmexqlusiv.com/posts/577-Boddika_-_Soul_What_Remixes.

Another new artist Synthetic Epiphany, album name The Archives. Tracks used “Hallowed” - “The Archives” and “Green Heat.” If you love the sound listen to the rest of he album on http://syntheticepiphany.bandcamp.com/

The weirdest album and track name, comes from Japan. Fugenn & The White Elephants, track played “M” from the album “Pray.” Superb track.

New tune from Killawatt & Ipman “Warehouse Dub” released for Lion Charge Records.
Few track fom the superb album “Red Planet” by The Others  for Dub Police. Titled track “Red Planet” and “Antithesis which features vocals by Stamina MC. The more I listen to this album, the more I love it. Its great that the dubstep sound is passed to a new course. Hope it stays there, cause it just hit the spot of being awesome again.

Mojo is one of my new favorite artist – 20 years old dude from Sheffield, U.K. Spotted him on the “Superman” EP for Buygore rec. Love the guitar strings and the moody dubstep sound, far from the glitches and the shitty edm stuff. Just released the new EP “Blues” for Terrorhythm Recordings, iv included three tracks from it, “Blues”, “Nobody’s Fool” and “Across The Pond.” Love the whole ep, love Mojo’s sound. This is a very good year for dubstep, I can feel it.

Von D, track from his album “Daydreaming” released by Boka Records, track titled “ASAP.” Another tracks released by Boka Recordings, are remix by Von D of the track “Give” by Funk Ethics & Lucid Directions And artist named  Instinct with his track “Elude” found on  Boka Artillery vol.3
The last tune of this torture mix is Undefied and remix of their track “Give Me Strength” by Digid.

As you can guess the next two tunes are here to end podcast #06 sessions. First of we start with Nikola Trpevski and his solo projects “S.A.M. Comes from Tetovo (Macedonia) and he is a member of the dubstep/dnb duo – The BassMighty Kreatorz. You had a chance to listen to their remix of Lana Del rey – Summertime Sadness. You can check them out https://soundcloud.com/the-bassmighty-kreatorz. Nikola or S.A.M. plans to release album this year. Track in this podcast named “Grevot na Gradotwas made in collaboration with Rootsman I , lead singer of Conquering Lion also from Tetovo. You can see the influence of the two project of Nikola, mixture of hip-hop, dubstep and probably drum and bass sound. The lyrics are too harsh but true, in terms of most hip-hop artists who prefer to rap about fake stuff.

Last artist on this podcast session are “Dlaboka Traga”. Only one track was used from their solid album “Neizgovoreno.” Album titled “Никогаш Исто” has 15 tracks, made by Zad Agolot Production. Love the artwork and most of the tunes. You can hear the whole album which has been released free on http://www.hiphop.mk/makedonija/1258-albumotn-na-dlaboka-traga-dostapen-besplatno
Really sorry no to include the artists that were planed, but not included in this session.

S.U.B. Podcast #05 Interview with Kaloo (Bg)

Hello everybody. In this weeks podcast we have another dj guest, already known to few of you. He made a few sets in Skopje as a drum and bass / break beat dj. DJ Solaris comes from Sofia (Bulgaria),  works as a graphics designer, dj, producer, runs the e-zine http://bassline.bg/ . New musical taste brought his house / disco project Kaloo ( https://soundcloud.com/kaloo-1).  This week podcast session made by Kaloo for S.U.B. is a mixture of house/uk funky sounds.  To spice things up, here is an interview with Kaloo (Solaris).

As DJ Solaris, you have made an impression on those few parties in Skopje. Great mixing skills, even if you rolled liquid, there was no problem to run other sub-genres in your sets. Have to ask you, why the sudden style change ?

Well, it was not very sudden. First, I become uncomfortable being almost the only DJ constantly trying to play not just heavy beats but music. At this time d'n'b scene in Bulgaria was all about heavy shit. Second and more important, I got really bored from the constant unofficial competition - which is the best crew (crews are lame btw), who is the best DJ, who is the best promoter and all the shit that fans and DJ's talked behind each others backs. If you look now you'll see that the so called 'biggest' or 'best'  d'n'b promoter is pushing liquid stuff (finally!) and the competition is still on. They cannot overcome this shit and I'm not into it anymore. I spent 6 years of my life being a d'n'b DJ and I can say I had great time. I do love d'n'b music and I always will. I still got big collection of liquid funk records at my place, which reminds me how I was bursting my ass working to get every single record so I'll never sell them for this reason.

One of the things which brought me back to the roots of electronic music (as a raver kid I started with techno and house, before I discover d'n'b) was the sudden birth of the dubstep thing. I really liked the 4 to the floor techno/dubstep hybrid tunes. Some of the DJ's were combining it with house music. It really fascinated me. Then I realized the liquid funk I used to love so much is actually build on the foundation of the house music. All the mellow sounds from deep house and all the sweet female accapellas are from there.

I also visited Amsterdam Dance Event as a journalist, representing DJ MAG Bulgaria in 2009 and I get so much knowledge about electronic music, all it's genres and how the people in this industry do business and so on. Of course I had an amazing time clubbing in Amsterdam too. So when I got back I already knew that being only into one thing is not for me. Not anymore.

Now as a house DJ I have the freedom to go into the nu-disco/house field or the techno or garage/bass and it's possible because they are running on almost similar BPM. This is a big plus. Now when I have a gig I don't know what to expect because everything depends on the mood of the crowd. Sometimes I'm playing disco music all night, sometimes I have crazy techno gigs. It's awesome.

Your e-zine bassline.bg is one of the first DIY internet magazines that covers Bass music. At first you have covered for drum and bass / break beat, now you are covering dubstep / uk funky,  house and etc. Did the Bassline.bg made and impact on the clubbing scene as you hope to?

Well, I believe that the right philosophy when you are into electronic music is just doing what you like. If you don't make compromises and you stand behind your principles then sooner or later someone will come and say 'I really like your job!' and you'll get the appreciation you deserve. So this apply to the website as well. Bassline.bg is not pretending to be a big media or something. I don't care if someone put my logo on his flyer or give me free entrance for his event 'cause it's in my website. If something is good and fit to the concept of the site it will appear there naturally. I can say it reach not so many, but the right people. And yeah, it helps in some way for the development of the electronic music culture in Bulgaria.

Do you consider yourself to be a geek, since you are a passionate collector of gundam robot figures ?

Yes I'm 100% otaku. I'm crazy about giant robots/mecha anime and manga. I love spending weekends building some model kit. You must be filled with a lot of patience and you have to be very precise and handy. Also they fit great next to the turntables and are somehow part of my home interior.

How long do you run the project Kaloo, are you satisfied with this project?

I think already explained my view in the previous question. It's already 4 years being Kaloo instead of Solaris. As a DJ I don't push hard to have many gigs. I prefer the quality than the quantity. Mainly I play when someone invites me or when I and some fellow DJ decided to throw a party just for the fun. I have a great job as an art director and making money from DJ-ing is not my priority. I love music. I love to play music. That's it. For almost a year I'm doing some producing. This is the next field after graphic design in which I want to become very good. As a practical person I know that in the current state my production is not perfect, but you can decide for yourselves at: https://soundcloud.com/kaloo-1

S.U.B. Podcast #04 Review & Download

So it’s a start of a new year, and with it comes new sounds. Many styles, free music, club bangers, independed artist to be discovered in this week’s S.U.B. Podcast #04. Starting of with Murlo with a track from his Quartz EP for Lowup Records. Loved the tunes “Soundboy” and “Prism”.  Second track opener was Weiter by Kempa from his EP “On my head” for Disturbing Noise Rec. Young and talented producer, loved “Weiter” and the German vocals in it. Made it perfect i had to share this tune.

Face & Heel – No Stars EP for Warm Records. Glitch sound continues in  Haywyre
album Infinity. You can get it for free here: http://haywyre.bandcamp.com/album/infinite.
Another drum and bass dj/producer Rregula experimenting with the sounds of  Neuro dnb and glitch hop, as you can hear it in his track “Beast”.

Two singles for No doubt, moombahtron banger “Settle down” and “Push and shove” which is the name of their new album released last year. I won’t criticize the album, love some of their older tunes. At least they are trying to keep up with the sound. On both of the tracks used in this podcast were produced by Major Lazer (Diplo) and as a guest Busy Signal. “Push and shove” great single, two bad that they didn’t made the whole album in this kind of vibes. Too much mushy stuff inside, maybe that’s why they are not my favorite band, for Gven that’s a different story.

Major Lazer releasing bangers and free singles for the promotion of their new upcoming album “Free the universe” release date February 19, 2012.

Subranger - producer from Russia released debut album “Welcome” and he wants to share it with the world. Download: www.sendspace.com/file/rcwz62
Foolish Green (Nenad Stefanovski) young artist from Macedonia, know as a hip-hop producer for Green Out, Legijata, Protiv Site etc. With the solo project Foolish Green he is experimenting with psychedelic pop, alternative British rock, punk, trip hop etc. Promotional EP “Sun is Gone” was released by the neighboring MTV sites. As announcement to his first album entitled “Escape”.

The BassMighty Kreatorz is a musical duo from Tetovo,Macedonia. Love their bootleg remix of Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness. You can download it here: https://soundcloud.com/the-bassmighty-kreatorz/lana-del-rey-summertime.
Shuriken is the first single by the producer Tendo and Drop Sensei crew from Serbia.   Drop Sensei is a five man crew (Bozne, Lehel, Rokster, Dardy D & Senzzor.). Club banger, was surprised by it, great vibe for a first single.
Feel free to contact them at: dropsensei@gmail.com

Biggest surprise in the 2013 was the release of the first volume “Do kraja Sveta”. Collaboration between the producers Wikluh Sky & Rahmanee.  This project was announced 2011, with the preview of their unofficial single “Dobri Dani”. The track made real mayhem throughout the last year in most of clubs in the Balkans. Theme of this album is described as post-apocalyptic love songs in modern arrangement such as break beat, funk, drum and bass, dubstep. Their first official single was the dubstep track “Bella morte”. The album was released by MTV sites in Balkan region on the first of January. Except the music, the lyrics are the prior factor to the success of this free release. My favorite from this volume is “Urgentni centar”, mockery of a unhappy married life. Last tune of this podcast is the opening number “Pocetak kraja”. Summary, cant wait for the release of the second volume. Download link : http://mtvideo.nivas.hr/files/Wikluh_Sky-Rahmanee-Do_Kraja_Sveta%20_Vol1.zip

It’s a MUST!

Well this is the end point for me, lot of tracks were not mentioned. Loved and recommending : Mala – Mala in Cuba true gem.

Feel free to send in your tracks or mixes if you want to be a part of S.U.B. podcast series.

S.U.B. Podcast #03 Interview with Gameover (Mk)

Within the holidays spirit in this weeks podcast you can hear the mix by Game Over. He works as a dj/producer in Skopje. Started with a hip-hop group called “RHB“, had a dubplate released by Aphrodite, founded Tech Squad ( local d&b crew), was a part of local radio shows “Tecna Kujna“ and “Drum Time“ and he was involved in a urban culture magazine “Filter“. He released couple of EP’s, remixes, played in most of the clubs in Macedonia and neighboring countries. A real A-Lister and good technician. His style is described like “drum and bass with techno, hip-hop and soulful influences”. He also spins dubstep, hip-hop, funk.. never to settle down for just one music style.

How’s it going?  Did you like 2012, the end of the world and "how would you go further”?

- 2012 was a real roller coster for me, both on personal and professional level. A whole lot of new experiences. Shame the world didn't end, now we all have to face the reality. Maybe some big asteroid will help us all soon. About the future, just go with the flow :)

There is a saying you use a lot, roughly translated to: “Peace on Earth, bread for everyone”. So how are you views on the crops for the 2013, what will this mysterious number bring us?

- Sadly there is neither peace on earth nor bread for everyone. Heaven and hell, the balance of the universe, bla bla bla. Never been quite the philosopher. 2013 will bring nothing, we have to bring it ourselves. 2013 is just a number, just like our age.

Ten years as dj, what are the good and the bad things about it?

- Actually, twelve. There aren't any bad things. Maybe the dj stereotypes, but that is inevitable I guess..

Over ten years the urban genres such as hip-hop, drum and bass, nowadays dubstep, have been overthrown by the population, even from the "underground" circles. However there are people, dj's, producers, even radio host that are trying to keep that sub cultural movements going and growing.  Where does drum and bass and the rest of those neglected genres belong?

- Somewhere in the middle. You can't pin them down on either side of the spectrum. It has been tried before, but as DJ Primer said: "Underground will live forever baby, we just like roaches, never dying, always living."

Hip hop went into pop culture here in Macedonia. Are the rappers still in crisis?

- The rappers will always be in crisis. When you stop being in crisis, you are not a rapper anymore. Simple as that.

Most of us are aware of the shitty system we are living in, how do you manage in it as a dj and what are your aspirations for the future.

- I'm doing what I love. And I'm doing it the best way I know. I know it's a cliche, but if you are good at what you do, everyone will realise and appreciate it.

Why do you love dnb, and the rest of the urban music, is pop music wrong?

- I love it cause of it's complexity and simplicity. It can give you what pop music can't. At least today's pop. I guess I was raised listening to so much different quality music, it all had to culminate with dnb, along with breaks, dubstep and whatnot.

If you buy a pound of nuts, how much will it cost you?

- I would probably get it for free, cause of the face pass I got :D

Enjoy the mix ! it's not exactly what I would play in a club. Maybe in a small bar on a cold winter's day :)

THAT'LL BE 4 BUCKS BABY! YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT!?!?
