SUB: Well, don’t know how to say this, the studio session that you
guys have made truly rocks. I was skeptic at first because of the levels
of the microphone, but after 5 minutes you just blend in the session.
Did you all had fun while recording it?
* Greetings to
one and all. Musically inspired we were conquering new horizons, in that
session we put much energy to mek it sound live and direct like on a
show. Running and jumping through the studio, that is how we managed to
hold onto the jump up style and produced the lyrics. A likkle spliff mek
it more hotta, seen.
SUB: How long does Natty Fiyah exist, and how did you come to the idea to create a sound system?
*
We founded Natty Fiyah in 2009, which makes 4 years by now. The main
idea was to make a reggae sound system and promote that musical vibez
through our likkle country. As shows were flowing we realized that we
can mix the reggae sound and vocals with some other similar genres that
could mix good with the reggae like jungle and drum’n’bass. So now we
mek a foundation inna reggae style and then move on through dub music
all the way to the massive jungle.
SUB: Where have you played as Natty Fiyah Sound System?
*
Throughout the year 2009 the sound system rocked only on homestead
locations throughout Macedonia, Tetovo, Skopje, Prilep, Bitola, Ohrid,
Kumanovo. And then in 2010 we managed to go on tour with Conquering
Lion, and said let’s put Natty Fiyah in the whole story too so we did
some support warm-up parties throughout the Balkans where the band was
touring.
SUB: The first time I have seen you performed,
was at a party in Kapan An. My jaw dropped as I saw the first guy that
ever climbed the stage and performing on a drum and bass music, and he
didn’t sucked. You just blend in… from where do you draw your energy for
performing?
* When I turned from roots to singjay style
and combined them both I started producing more powerful flow and could
rock it steady like that for hours, the main engine that drives me is
wiping off the corruption of Babylon that has been placed upon this
world, so when I’m on the stage, me draw pictures in my head and speak
them lyrically to the people so dem can get the message, understand it
and wake up from the slumber. In the end what gives the spice is the
fast drum and bass riddim that is constantly bumping up.
SUB:
You have just released a new single “Wicked Man”. Tell us something
about third album of Conquering Lion that is in preparation?
*
Yes I. It’s been 2 years since the last release, and we switched some
members and now there is this fresh energy that made us work on our
third release. It will be called
“Revelation” to reveal the truth
behind the lies seen. The album itself will be like a story and “Wicked
Man” is the beginning of it. The concept is to tell about the wicked
and corrupted things, but also to explain how to avoid and do something
different than that. So when you play it, it should sound like you are
reading a book and all the songs are connected between themselves like
topics in a book. The album will be recorded in Macedonia but it will be
mastered in France. The release date is yet to be scheduled but most
likely it will be sometime in September.
SUB: Don’t know
if someone ever asked you by now, what does “Conquering Lion” stands
for; is it something more than just a name?
* This is a
question that has not been asked very often, so I will take my minute
and explain to the bredrin’ and sistren’. Conquering Lion stands for the
ideology of Rastafari Movement (African Zionism) through their songs.
Rastafari ideology (African Zionism) is an ideology that fights for
freedom of the human race. It means no politics, no government, no
presidents, no police, no church*, no kingdoms, no authorities, no
hierarchy… So, with this “plan of living” and social organization,
Rastafari ideology has completely anarchistic attributes. It demands
freedom of whole human race and love and harmony in every (and between)
every human being. We use the similar terms and phrases as
American/Jewish Zionism, but we have completely different meaning in the
background of it. Seen.
SUB: I must say that the sound
of the “Conquering Lion” and the whole band has progressed into a
serious act. Are you satisfied of the bands progress and do you think it
is accepted enough by the Macedonian public?
* Yes
bredah’, at the current time we be working with full steam and produce
massive sounds, since all the bredrin in the band have taken the act
seriously and we will produce even better sounds in future. The
situation in Macedonia it is very rough and tough when it comes to
audience since people don’t have high salaries and most of them are
unemployed so sometimes it’s hard to see many people on a concert, but
still there are people who are supporting us in many different ways.
What pleases me is that there is no age limit for our music, there are
older people that listen to us and there is the younger generation as
well that support us. The situation in Macedonia will grow even higher
in the upcoming years I am sure of it.
SUB: These previous years the whole band was touring trough the region. Are you about to embark on a new tour?
*
Yes the Lion can’t sit upon one place him must conquer. After the
release of the third album we are planning to do a European tour this
October/November. It will be a nice journey and we can get to know
better with the new members. Live and direct inna di Ras mobile.
SUB:
Thank you very much for the interview and the hyper magic set that you
guys have made for Skopje Urban Beats. If you have something to add
please…
* Give thanks for your time, patience and energy to make
this interview and give it to the people out there. Conquering Lion and
Natty Fiyah bless ya all out there and give thanks for your support
through all this years. Stay strong me people!
